ChatGPT Boosts Student Originality in New Study

A randomized OpenAI study of more than 1,000 students found that using ChatGPT — especially alongside critical-thinking training — improved originality and quality on real assignments, compared with not using it at all.

Students with ChatGPT access scored higher on originality and overall quality than those without it, but the largest gains came from the group that combined AI use with explicit critical-thinking instruction — not from AI access alone.

AI didn’t replace thinking in the study — it amplified it. Students who learned to question, refine and build on ChatGPT’s suggestions produced more original work than those who used it uncritically, and more original work than those who didn’t use it at all.
